“And there came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth’s mightiest heroes and heroines found themselves united against a common threat. On that day, the Avengers were born-to fight the foes no single super hero could withstand!”

As the Heroic Age dawns on the Marvel Universe and we prepare for a new chapter in the ongoing saga of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, each Friday Marvel.com will present a different column focusing on the one and only Avengers. From line-ups to costumes to villains to classic stories and beyond, we’ve got you covered on the history of Marvel’s most prolific team of heroes!

So let the call go out: Avengers Assemble!

Editor Bill Rosemann has been a mainstay at Marvel Comics for years now, kept very busy steering the cosmic titles and others, including of late AVENGERS ACADEMY as well as HAWKEYE & MOCKINGBIRD. We caught Bill in a rare moment of relative calm and asked him that all-important question: Who are your all-time favorite Avengers characters?

5. Captain America (Steve Rogers)
“Because as Frank Miller once wrote [in DAREDEVIL #232], Cap has “the voice that can command a god…and does.”

4. Hawkeye (Clint Barton)
“Because someone needs to tell Iron Man and Captain America when they’re wrong.”

3. Thor
“When some jerk like Graviton has the rest of the team on the ropes, that’s when the Thunder God brings down the hammer.”

2. Giant-Man (Hank Pym)
“Every fight is better when there’s a huge guy smashing stuff. This founding Avenger delivers the brains and visual that can’t be beat.”

1. The Vision
“An android-actually a synthezoid-can indeed cry, and also be the heart and soul of the ever-evolving roster.”
